Police investigation to the lost iPhone 4G

Apple insists on a police investigation to the cause of the lost prototype of the Apple iPhone 4G. In court documents a detailed summary of a meeting between Apple and its lawyers on hand and the police on the other hand can be read. A judge in the U.S. city of San Mateo released the documents under pressure from the media.

A lawyer representing Apple, explains what the damage of the lost prototype is to Apple: "The publication of details about the device and its functions affects the sale of the current generation iPhones. People who would buy a phone, are now waiting for the next generation. This negatively impacts Apple's sales and profits. "

Another passage in the court document describes a wild search of the police to the evidence. The person who originally found the iPhone in a cafe, still had evidence at home. When he found out that there was a judicial inquiry, he has his computer, the prototype of stickers, flash memory and a USB stick hidden.

The police is looking for all the evidence at a service station, a church and in bushes. The frantic search was launched after iPhone finder Brian Hogan was betrayed by his roommate Katherine Martison. She called the police to say that Hogan was moving the evidence. Martison has trusted more details to the police. She said that Hogan shown her a box with $ 5,000 and that he had told her that he had received $ 8,500 for the iPhone. Hogan told her that at the launch of the iPhone he will receive a bonus.

What would you do after you found the prototype of the next iPhone? Would you sell it to media like Hogan, or would you tell the police? Hogan sure got some money for it, but I believe he has gained more problems than benefit by finding the iPhone 4G prototype.

Web 2.0

Do you know what web 2.0 means? It is not a new version of the Internet.. Web 2.0 does not only provide you information, it is an interactive network platform. It wants users to interact, react and add value. Do you already use web 2.0? If not: you definitely need an upgrade!

Web 2.0 is also called the social web. It is an overall term for diverse internet websites which accent the interaction between users. Think about websites such as Hyves, Facebook, Wikipedia, LinkedIn etcetera. They allow you to react and give feedback, maintain relationships and collaborate. It is web 1.0 that simply presents you information, web 2.0 actually interacts with you.
Web 2.0 is a mass collaboration between people. It allows crowdsourcing, which means outsourcing to the world. Most of the ideas and knowledge can not be found within your own organization. Therefore open innovation can come in handy. An example of a website that is providing crowdsourcing as a strategy is Innocentive.com.
Web 2.0 is more social than web 1.0. It is crucial in web 2.0 to involve people in a subject, problem or product. It is not so much about an internet of documents anymore, as about an internet of people. In web 2.0 users add value, because of user generated content.

Augmented Reality - Layar

Are you already using the Layar app? This is the first application using augmented reality. In this post I will explain what augmented reality means using the example Layar.

The first question: what does augmented reality means? In Dutch it means "toegevoegde realiteit". Augmented reality connects the real world with the virtual world. This way, the boundaries between reality and computers fade away, you will not be able anymore to distinguish the difference between reality and virtuality.
Now what does the Layar app do? It shows the reality (what you actually see) on the display of your mobile and then adds stuff like 'houses for sale' and 'the city map'. With 'houses for sale' you can find houses in your neighborhood that are for sale. It also displays how much the houses cost and how you can navigate to them. With 'the city map' your camera shows you what you are seeing and the Layar shows where you are on the map and where you are looking at. So you won't have to turn around your map anymore (women). Other Layars are: finding bars and clubs, finding jobs, finding ATMs etc.
The Layar app also has a 3D version. This 3D Layar app contains domes (koepels). When you enter a dome you enter a whole different world, like a Japanese street when you are actually in Amsterdam. It looks very real, but it is virtual.

(In Dutch) You can watch a movie clip about the Layar app.

BlackBerry vs. Apple vs. BlackBerry

Have you seen BlackBerry's commercial versus Apple? It displays the competition between BlackBerry and Apple.

BlackBerry came up with a commercial in which a blackberry shoots an apple. With this ad BlackBerry is making a statement that their new touchscreen phone beats Apple's iPhone. Apple did respond to this commercial with almost the same commercial. The slight difference is that now the blackberry explodes when hitting the apple. What do you think about Apple's reaction?

You can watch both the commercials below:

BlackBerry's commercial

Apple's response

The competition between Apple and BlackBerry can be clarified by the fact that they offer consumers the same sort of products. Apple is well known for its iPhone, a smartphone with a touchscreen. BlackBerry introduced its new smartphone with also a touchscreen. This urged the rivalry between Apple and BlackBerry. BlackBerry claims its touchscreen to be more advanced than the iPhone's touchscreen. I have my doubts, because for now I haven't seen a better touchscreen than Apple's.

What touchscreen do you think is more advanced? Are you pro BlackBerry or do you like the iPhone better?

GrappievanAppie

Did you hear about the promotion for Albert Heijn on iPhone around easter?
They have made up a marketing program around their application on the Apple iPhone, called Grappie van Appie. It is a simple feature in their "Appie" app, which displays a funny animation when the users types in one of the selected products. When you find one of the selected products you will receive a special holder for your iPhone. There are only five products in Appie that show an animation, so it might be challenging to find one. To make it a little easier, Appie provides help on Twitter. Follow grappievanappie and receive special hints. With this help it is not that hard at all to find one of the products. When you find all five products you get a hint for the sixth Grappie. Sixth? Yes, in one Albert Heijn in the Netherlands a golden holder for an iPhone is hidden. When one finds this golden Grappie, he or she receives a brand new iPad! Many Apple lovers were waiting in front of this Albert Heijn in Amsterdam this morning to look for the golden Grappie. The winner has been mentioned and he received the iPad. You can still join in the search for the five Grappies in Appie. Just download the Appie app on your iPhone, type in a product and look at the product's details. If an animation pops up you found a Grappie and you can report this at the AH website. Alright then, one hint: put some fruit in your milk.

Mind-Reading Computers

In my previous blog you could read about computers controlling the brain of a mouse. This blog will bring this to the next level. Mind Reading computers may be the future, the very close future...

In Japan scientists are experimenting with computers that respond to a human's mind. in the beginning there was just a white screen with a little dot in the middle that could be replaced by a person's thoughts. The experiment looks like some ingenious test of mental telepathy. The subject must be in deep concentration so that the computer can read his brain waves. The subject does not move or control the computer in any other way than with his mind. The little dot moves around, say to the right when the subject thinks about the dot going right. This is not very advanced yet, but the latest developments allow people to play easy games like pong. Controlling a computer with your mind is not always easy. Say you are hungry and your tummy growls. You will think: "I am hungry", but then, oops, that is not a controllable experiment!

Mind-Controlling Computers

For ages human beings have had a great interest for the human brain. Frightening stories about brain operations to people without narcosis have been going in the round. Clairvoyants are trying to look into peoples minds and in fairly tales the mind is controlled by evil monsters. If you thought that this is all fantasy, you might be a little shocked about this blog..

The latest developments in science is not only reading a mind, but also controlling a mind.. Scientists can control the movements of a rat. This is an unique interface between animal and machine. The scientists are guiding the rat wirelessly by sending signals from a laptop computer to his brain. By stimulating the right brain area, the rat turns right. By stimulating the left brain area, the rat turns left. The rat does have a choice, but when it does its asked, the rat is rewarded by stimulating his pleasure centre. Scholars believe that this development is an huge development in understanding the brain. I think that those developments are frightening because, as you will be able to read in my next blog, these new findings are also implemented on human beings! I would not be pleased if somebody was controlling my mind...

Microsoft Surface

The way that we communicate with computers is changing. The way that computers communicate with us is also changing. We do not only interact with computers by typing in information anymore. The newest developments include speech, touch and other senses. My coming blogs will be about these developments.
This time: Microsoft Surface: far beyond, but not far away.

Microsoft Surface brings people together with a multi-touch and multi-user experience. It is a table and a computer screen at one. You can have direct interaction with Microsoft Suface, because they do not need a mouse or keyboard. Users simply use their hands to interact. The system responds to multi-touches, not just to one finger or hand. The screen is large enough for a few people to gather around, therefore it is a multi-user experience. This way, you maintain the face-to-face contact while using a computer. What I think is the most exciting part of Microsoft Surface is the fact that it can recognize objects. For example, if you place a camera on Surface, it transfers the photos on the camera into the screen. This way you can immediately take a look at your photos and share them with others!

Now you may think that this is yet far away, but I believe this is the (near) future. Some companies, hotels and restaurants are already making use of Microsoft Surface. Now I do not have the money for it, but I would love to replace my coffee table by Microsoft Surface!

Twitterrific

I fell in love with... Twitter!
Just a couple weeks ago I was very sceptic about Twitter. I did not understand why everybody was Twittering and talking about Tweets and stuff. Until I started Twittering for a schoolproject..

Twitter is addictive and actually kind of fun to be honest. At first I did not get it at all; I did not know how to post a Tweet or follow fellow-Twitterers. After an hour of practise I posted my first real Tweet. I downloaded the application "Twitterrific" on my iPhone. This application allows me to Twitter anywhere. Everytime I open the application it shows me how many new Tweets have been posted by who and when. So it really keeps me up-to-date with Twitter, I won't miss a single Tweet. Twitterrific also gives you the opportunity to post new Tweets, you will only need a working Internet connection. So with the convenience of this application, I joined the Twitter hype.

I found some celebrities on Twitter who have more than 100.000 followers and I realized that Twitter can reach a large crowd. Is Twitter just another hype that will fade away in time? I don't know, but I think that Twitter can be an ideal marketing-tool. For example, how did you find my blog, could it maybe because of Twitter? Companies, such as The Iconfactory (makers of the application Twitterrific) already adapt to the Twitter hype. Do you think Twitter is terrific?

Oh and follow me on Twitter: lindastege !

The new way of working

Lately everybody is talking about the new way of working. Is this really a succesful development? I'll try to explain to you what this new way of working is about and what I think future will bring us.

Many people think that the new way of working is the same as "working at home", but it is not. The new way of working does not rely on time or place, which makes it a more efficient way of working. This new way of working can be realized by the networkfunction of the great Internet. Offices become more and more redundant, it is no longer important to center around one working place where the boss supervises.

So what do I think about the new working reality? I LOVE IT! And why? Because I really like the fact that this way of working is based on trust, instead of suspicion and presence. The new way of working gives opportunity to a better balance between working life and privat life. I would be very pleased if my boss would suggest this way of working to me.

What do you think about the new way of working?
